Spanish wine to try
We’re here to demystify wine and sell you something you’ll love. If you’re looking for something traditional then we have plenty, we also have a stock of new unique wines from Spain that are perfect for the wine connoisseur looking to try something a little different.
Rioja
Some may not know that Rioja is actually a wine growing region not a grape variety. The name has been embedded in people’s hearts for many years because of it’s incredibly delicious style that is like no other.
Rioja has 4 aging classifications:
Joven (meaning young) sometimes your bottle may read just ‘tinto’.
Crianza is the next step up, wines with this written on the label must be aged for at least 2 years.
Rioja Reserva is a step up again, this wine must be aged for at least 3 years, one of those years it must age in oak.
Finally we have the big daddy ‘Rioja Gran Reserva’ wines with this classification must be aged for at least 2 years in oak and three years in oak. So, you know when you buy a bottle of Gran Reserva it must be at least 5 years old.
Corks Out stocks many Riojas, however a customer favourite is La Rioja Alta Viña Ardanza Reserva, at a great price this vintage wine suits many tastes and is totally worth what you pay.
Toro
If Rioja is the jewel in the crown, then Toro is very much the new kid on the block. These powerful wines stem from a small village on the banks of the Duero River, and are well on their way to becoming big players in the Spanish wine world.
Sherry
No exploration of Spanish wine would be complete without sherry, the famous fortified wine made from grapes grown near the sun-kissed Andalucían town of Jerez.
Often ignored, those wise enough to dive into the world of sherry will know that there is much to enjoy, with a broad spectrum of dry and sweet varieties that serve as an aperitif or meal accompaniment.
Drier sherries can be well matched with fish, meat and cheese, while sweeter options such as Pedro Ximenez make a truly marvellous dessert wine.
