The Chateau Musar red wines are made from a blend of grape varieties, namely: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan. The vines are grown on a gravely soil with a limestone base. The composition varies from one year to the next, giving Château Musar a different character and identity each year. Château Musar makes every effort at producing totally natural wines, letting each one develop its own character, and the 1975 vintage is no exeption, developing into a magnificent wine.

Château Musar first achieved international recognition during the Bristol Wine Fair in England in 1979, where the wine press and prominent critics including Michael Broadbent declared it \"the discovery of the fair\". In 1984, the respected wine magazine Decanter named Serge Hochar the first ever \"Wine Man of the Year\" for his extraordinary achievements, determination and dedication to producing wines during the difficult years of the Lebanese Civil War.

History of Chateau Musar

Lebanese viticulture was introduced 6000 years ago by the Phoenicians who whilst traded their wines throughout the Mediterranean. In antiquity, wine was exported from Byblos, Tyre and Saida to Egypt, with references found in countless Egyptian inscriptions and paintings.

The reputation of the wine of Canaan was such that Egyptians reported it to be \"as abundant as flowing water\" and it is believed to have been the inspiration for the Romans to build their largest temple in Baalbek in the Bekaa Valley. Several centuries later, another temple was built devoted to Bacchus, God of Wine. Gaston Hochar created Château Musar in Ghazir in 1930 in the cellars of the old 17th century 'Mzar' castle, overlooking the Mediterranean sea. Using the experience he had gained from time spent in the vineyards of France, he developed a passion for producing wine. Gaston was inspired by an encounter with renowned viticulturist Ronald Barton while he was stationed in Lebanon during the Second World War, and in 1959, Serge his eldest son, entered the business and became the man behind this exceptional wine.

The vineyards of Château Musar are located at an altitude of 1,000 meters, sheltered by the surrounding mountains which run parallel to the Mediterranean coast. The 180 hectares produces a limited yield of about 35 hl/ha per annum. This limited yield, combined with an almost frost and disease free environment, with long mild summers, rainy winters, and an average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius makes this an ideal location for growing the classic Chateau Musar vintages.
