Classic Australian wines
The main grape varieties grown in Australia include Shiraz, Riesling, Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Australian Sauvignon Blanc is well worth a try, as it is vibrantly crisp, elegant and fresh with plenty of tropical and citrus fruit flavours. Riesling - particularly those from Clare and Eden Valley - has also risen in popularity in recent years as a result of its citrus flavours and refreshing acidity.
Chardonnay is another Australian wine that has been revitalised, with the newer styles ranging from fresh and laden with minerals to powerful and rich. We would recommend the Logan Chardonnay Orange with its aromas of pear, orange ride and oaky spice as well as the Pemberley Chardonnay, which has a flavourful and complex palate with characters of melon and white peach.
More Australian wines well worth a try
If you are looking to try something new and a little bit different, we would suggest that you pick up a bottle from Australian wine producers Some Young Punks.
The winemakers are serious about making nothing but exceptional quality wines, adopting a style that combines the very best from both the Old and New World. At Corks Out, we stock a wide variety of their incredible bottles including:
- Monsters Monsters Attack Riesling: With floral, fresh tangerine and green apple aromas accompanied by notes of apricots and white peach, this Riesling is incredibly full flavoured with notes of pit fruit and honeydew accompanied by zesty lemon.
- Squids Fist Sangiovese: Shiraz grapes are enveloped in Sangiovese to create notes of dark plum, sweet ripened cherries, dark chocolate spice and a touch of rose. On the palate you can find a high level of acidity and good tannin content, which keep the wine rich, fresh and very much full of life.
- Lust Collides Mataro: A big beefy Australian red where spiced anise, tobacco and smoky herbs are layered with dark raspberries and sweet ripened cherries. Firmed by soft tannins and uplifted by its minerality, the finish is delightfully smooth and smoky.
We have a selection of other Australian wines from Some Young Punks including a Chardonnay with a great level of complexity, Shiraz Cabernet with a rich and sensuous structure and their Battle Island White which contains fresh fruity notes of guava, pear, passion fruit and zesty lime.
