The Vina Ardanza Reserva 2001 is a product of 30 year old vines at Fuenmayor, in the heart of La Rioja Alta, this Reserva has spent 3 years in used American oak barrels, finally making it into the bottle in March 2004. The result is a cherry red wine, with orange notes around the outer rim, offering an intense and complex nose of mature forest fruits, with notes of tobacco, cinamon and coconut. In the mouth, it is full and nicely structured, with fine tanins and good acidity, with the traditional Rioja flavours of mature fruit, vanilla, and a hint of spice. Enjoy with game, hard cheeses and cured meats.

On the 10th July 1890, 5 Basque and Riojano winemakers created the "Sociedad Vinicola de la Rioja Alta", in the Haro Station district of Rioja's principal town. Their goal was to make wines of quality, which expressed the tradition, land and grapes of Rioja. To this end, they used both modern and ancient techniques to make wines which spoke of a certain place.

In 1941, the collective was renamed "La Rioja Alta", and a year later, under the presidency of Leandro Ardanza Angulo, they released for the first time what would be their flagship wine for the vast majority of the 20th century - Viña Ardanza. The winery underwent modernisation and expansion throughout this period, and in 1970, 2 further bottlings were released to the market for the first time - Viña Alberdi and Viña Arana.

The group now owns and operates vineyards in Galicia, the Ribera del Duero and has purchased other estates in Rioja, all of which share the same desire to produce quality wines which reflect the place from which they originate

This was just simply wonderful. A traditional Rioja - just what you would expect.

I have been eyeing the wine on the shelves for ages, but dont normally spend £25 on Rioja. I am glad I finally have as this is stunning. It has an elegance I have never come across before in a Rioja. Avoid it at your peril.
