Rully is an often forgotten appellation at the very northern tip of the Cote Chalonnaise, just south of the Cote d’Or. It produces both red and white Burgundies which, in the right hands, can be fantastic wines of great value. Rully Blanc at Premier Cru level will rival many lesser Puligny and Chassagne Montrachet.
Domaine de l’Ecette comprises 14 hectares of grapes under vine. The current winemaker is Vincent Daux, who took over the running of the domaine in 1997 and his Rully Blanc Mazieres is superb, but for me, it’s his Rully Rouge Brange which hits the mark from this domaine.
Lush and ripe describe this wine. Two words not often associated with a red Burgundy. Velvety and silky are another two. You’d be hard pressed to find many red Burgundies worth their salt for under £20 and this is certainly one of them. Try it for yourself and you’ll see what I mean.
