Montes Purple Angel has an intense youthful purple color, typical from concentrated Carmenere. Delicate, with hints of chocolate and cigar box aromas. The Carmenere grapes from the Apalta estate provides elegance and spiciness. The Petit Verdot adds structure and the wildness of black berries. This wine is full bodied, with a considerable amount of ripe tannins giving grip and structure. Mouthfilling with a very long finish.

Pair with all red meats, casseroles, rich tomato and spice based dishes

Montes was created in 1988 when four prominent figures in the Chilean wine industry decided to set up a boutique winery, with the aim of producing small quantities of high quality wines largely for export. They initially called the operation "Discover wines" and established a winery in Curicó, 200 km south of Santiago. Initially, all the fruit came from the Montes estate and the Los Nogales farm. The operation was an immediate success and very quickly demand outstripped supply. Today Montes produces a range of award-winning, varietal wines from Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Carmenère resurfaced in Chile only in 1993, after being believed extinct since phylloxera hit Bordeaux, its original home, around 1880. In Chile, its sole home at the moment, it is considered it their "Chilean variety" and call it the "Jurassic Park" grape, returned from extinction.

Montes pioneered the Chilean wine scene by creating super-premium wines, including the Montes Alpha range, and icons such as Montes Alpha M and Montes Folly. Montes also led the way to quality by planting on steep mountain slopes. But Montes, Chile's wine pioneer, also knows when to wait –Aurelio Montes preferred to take his time and develop the Carmenère variety until he was satisfied that it could be a top contender, the very best Montes could possibly produce.

  1. Such an Angel

Posted by Hayley on 11th Nov 2010

I have been a lover of the Montes Purple Angel for a while now. I'm quite driven by new world wines and Chile is one of my favourite wine countries around. I tried this wine at one of the Corks Out annual tastings and it really caught my fancy! It's everything you want in a strong red and more. I am not a keen red drinker so I was surprised at my love for this wine and seen as I am not as well off as id like to be I was also surprised without hesitation I paid £25. In my mind its totally worth it!!
