This La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 is a typical red colour, with brick tones on the edge of the glass. This La Rioja wine has a long, penetrating and complex bouquet, with hints of spices, balsam and old leather against a background of ripe fruit. Well-structured to the palate, with silky, rich tannins, ending with some acidity so this wine will keep well. Excellent aftertaste, with persistent balsamic and spicy hints.

Excellent with meaty main dishes and chocolate desserts.

On the 10th July 1890, 5 Basque and Riojano winemakers created the "Sociedad Vinicola de la Rioja Alta", in the Haro Station district of Rioja's principal town. Their goal was to make wines of quality, which expressed the tradition, land and grapes of Rioja. To this end, they used both modern and ancient techniques to make wines which spoke of a certain place.

In 1941, the collective was renamed "La Rioja Alta", and a year later, under the presidency of Leandro Ardanza Angulo, they released for the first time what would be their flagship wine for the vast majority of the 20th century - Viña Ardanza. The winery underwent modernisation and expansion throughout this period, and in 1970, 2 further bottlings were released to the market for the first time - Viña Alberdi and Viña Arana.

The group now owns and operates vineyards in Galicia, the Ribera del Duero and has purchased other estates in Rioja, all of which share the same desire to produce quality wines which reflect the place from which they originate.

Product Reviews

  1. My kind of Rioja

Posted by Ed Burns on 14th Feb 2012

I would normally think of speanding £39 on Bordeaux or Burgundy but not Rioja. Under the reccomendation of a friend I gave it a go. This is one of the most mesmerising wines I have tried in an age. Elegant, mature and with a taste that lingers for every. Very impressive.

  2. Utterly devine

This is the closest Rioja has ever got to Burgundy in my opinion. Almost etherial in smell and taste. It has a wonderfully developed nose and incredible freshness. If you like your Rioja rich and with oddles of vanilla oak, then this is not for you. If you want to try something of exceptional quality and elegance then I cannot recommend this enough
