Designed to curb the gin epidemic and associated social problems of the 18th Century, the Gin Act of 1736 was enacted under the reign of George II. In order to stop people from distilling gin in their homes, the Act placed a levy on all gin producers - a licence costing £50 required by anyone distilling gin. After six years only two distillers had agreed to pay this tax and one family of independent London distillers created a recipe that they ironically nicknamed Fifty Pounds.
The recipe for this famously named Gin has remained in family hands for generations and is still produced to the orignal rescipe today, and it's involved creation makes for a truly unique London Dry Gin. Fifty Pounds uses as a base a grain spirit distilled four times to create a high quality neutral base. The botanicals are then steeped in the alcohol for at least two days, followed by a slow ditillation in a hundred year old John Dore still. The resultant spirit is left to settle for three weeks to ensure that the resultant flavours blend properly.
