Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur was inspired by the French tradition in which sweet and fresh elixirs were fortified by fine eaux de vie and cognac. Named for the ginger estate of Domaine de Canton, this armoatic elixir first became popular with the French during colonial Indochine.

Inspired by the subtle spiciness of the baby ginger grown there, the French began adding its exotic flavor to eau de vie and Cognac.
The recipe of Domaine de Canton evokes an era of tropical romance and continental sophistication that is both elegant and timeless. This ginger liqueur has a trulty unique taste that really should be tried.

  1. Leeds Guide Review, November 2010

You don’t really need to try Domaine de Canton before getting the feeling that this might be quite a high class brand. Just have a look at that bottle over there – all elegant angles and curves. And then scan over the ingredients – a blend of VSOP and Grande Champagne Cognac, honey from Provence, fresh vanilla and, the key ingredient, fresh Vietnamese baby ginger. Swanky, huh?

But, you probably want to know what Domaine de Canton is, right? It’s a French ginger liqueur, created by a man who’s previously launched Sky Vodka and Chambord and whose brother launched St Germain – a fairly high pedigree.

The drink’s based on the ginger elixirs drunk in French colonial Indo-Chine (hence “Canton”) during the 19th century. To taste, it’s initially sweet and sharp, with lashings of ginger and vanilla, which then builds to a longer, more spiced heat – helped by the 28% alcohol on show.

It’s a startlingly refreshing drink – especially if combined with tonic water – where it flips from being a nice warming winter treat to being a light thirst quencher, very diverse indeed.

So, what would you do with it? Well the people behind the drink have suggested a pretty substantial array of cocktails on the website, including plenty of twists on classics, including an Asian Pear Martini (1½ parts Domaine de Canton liqueur, 2 parts pear vodka, 1 part pear juice) and Ginger Mojito (2oz Domaine de Canton, ½ oz white rum, 3 lime wedges and mint). It also, as we’ve described, holds up well on its own, and can even be used in cooking.

Also, right now, bartenders across the country are dreaming up their own cocktail creations, hoping they’ll battle it out in a cocktail competition whose final round takes place on the Caribbean island of St Martin and holds a prize of £10,000. Not bad at all.

  2. Tasting Notes

Nose: very pure fresh cut ginger, initially then some faint marzipan and dark gingerbread; later, more candied ginger aromas and creamy
vanilla ice cream, with faint notes of apple, dessicated coconut and perfumey fresh flowers.

Palate: Medium-weight. Sweet and mouthcoating, but never heavy or sickly, and with pervasive honeyed ginger & vanilla notes lightened by flashes of intense, clean, fresh raw ginger character.

Finish: Decent length and remains sweet with ginger snap flavours.

Comment: An extremely well-balanced liqueur, with rewarding intensity of
flavour while still elegant and fresh on the palate. Very moreish.

  3. Possibly the most unusual liqueur in the world....

Tried this at the summer tasting. Tastes just how you would imagine a wonderfully sweet ginger liquer would taste, except the taste is so intense!

    Wonderful.

  4. Beautiful liqueur for Christmas present....
