On the palate there is concentrated jammy fruit with some spice, balanced by rounded, soft tannins and good acidity. The wine has good structure supporting the ripe fruit character which gives it a pleasant balance.
The Ronchedone 2009 is made from a blend of Marzemino, Sangiovese, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. These are grown in the family's own vineyards, located on the south banks of Lake Garda, near Sirmione. The soil is chalky-clay, and the vines are managed using single Guyot and cordon training. The grapes are harvested into mid-October, allowing for slower development and picking only when fully ripe. The fruit is then processed in the modern winery, where Igino Dal Cero focuses on the development of weight, texture and complexity on the palate within the wine by allowing some of the vats to go through malolactic fermentation.
The Ca’ dei Frati property has been transformed by the Dal Cero family into a model of what a modern Italian estate should be over the past decade. The family have balanced growth with quality. Since 1987, they have grown the estate from 12 hectares to 50 hectares of vineyard, whilst producing ever higher standards of wine, making them one of the most highly regarded producers in Lugana. During this time, the Dal Cero family have successfully positioned themselves as one of Italy’s best producers of white wine. The secret to their success has been suprisingly simple - outstanding vineyards. Whilst most producers overcrop and train the vines high, at Ca’ dei Frati the vines are trained low with newer vineyards that have a higher density of planting, resulting in yields that are well below the average for the zone.
