Incredibly well situated, the vineyard of the Château Montrose spans 94 hectares. The soil is composed of gravel, and ‘red stones' that come partly from the Pyrenees and partly from the Massif Central mountain range, and were carried by the Dordogne and Garonne rivers. Underneath, we find a layer of impermeable marl-clay in which the vines are rooted. The vineyard comprises of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon grape, 25% Merlot Noir and 10% Cabernet Franc. The vine work is carried out in a traditional way and the harvest s are manual. The wines, renowned for their exceptional longevity and their huge, powerful character, are amongst the best in northern Médoc.

The discovery and creation of the estate was down to Etienne-Théodore Dumoulin and his son, Etienne Junior. Etienne-Théodore bought the estate, on gravelly soil, from Alexandre de Ségur in 1778. The heather-filled land comprised of thousands of pink and purple flowers that acted as a landmark for travelers coming from the estuary, as well as a pink hill and a pink mount (‘mont rose' in French), which gave the name Montrose to the estate. Subsequently, the classification of the crus of Gironde in 1855 placed these wines amongst the Seconds Crus Classés. Due to the choice of grape type, the nature of the gravelly soil and its exposition to the sun, the Château earned a fine reputation. The wine that is produced there is, for many winelovers, the archetype of a big Bordeaux wine.

This excellent wine has bundles of sweet red and black fruits, fine tannins and an impressive length.
