Château Cantenac Brown was originally called Château Cantenac after one of the 3 wine making communes absorbed into the Margaux Appellation. After it was inherited by an unsuccessful English painter-cum-wine merchant called John Lewis Brown, in the early 19th century, it added Brown as a suffix. Of all the architecture in the Médoc, Cantenac-Brown seems to be the most incongruously English and is worth a visit for that alone. It is also well worth tasting in its revitalised state under the careful ownership of AXA who bought the 42 hectares of Cantenac Brown in 1989 - a propitious start with such a wonderful vintage. The planting is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and the average age of the vines is 32 years". In 2006 AXA sold on the property to Simon Halibi, whom we expect to take the property to new heights. Jose Sanfins, the gifted touch behind Ch du Moulin remains Cantenac Brown winemaker.
