Sauvignon Blanc - but not as you know it! | March 2007

Sauvignon Blanc – your favourite white wine? Whether it’s Sancerre from the Loire Valley or Marlborough from New Zealand we just love the crisp refreshing acidity, intense gooseberry and ripe tropical fruit flavours we associate with this grape.

But Sauvignon Blanc is far more varied than these household names. How about tasting something a little different this weekend? Menetou Salon from the Loire is a superb and reasonably priced alternative to Sancerre. A ripe, perfumed wine with peachy and gooseberry character; it’s a weighty style of Sauvignon with intense, powerful fruit and perfect with smoked salmon. Alternatively try Quincy - fresh and fruity and ideal with charcuterie, seafood and especially goat’s cheese.

Don’t forget some superb oak aged wines. Robert Mondavi Napa Fume Blanc from California is crisp with vibrant tropical fruit character and complex floral and mineral flavours. Barrel fermentation develops a creamy texture in an excellent food wine.

If you are looking for something sweeter, perhaps to go with cheese then Chilean Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc is a good place to start. Or why not treat Mum to Mount Riley ‘Savee’ sparkling Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand this Sunday?

Whatever you’re looking for Sauvignon Blanc has it all!
