Viognier has traditionally been a grape of the Northern Rhône but more recently has been planted in the Southern Rhône and the Languedoc. It is difficult to grow and must be harvested at precisely the right time in order to produce good wine. If picked too early, the wine will be thin and unbalanced, too late and it will lose the distinctive peach and honeysuckle aroma. The grape is key in many White Côte du Rhône, and it is increasingly being used unblended to make successful exhibiting apricot and peaches tones at a fraction of the cost of the White Côte du Rhône wines. It is also very successful when mixed with Syrah to produce some wonderful red wines. As with many grapes, it is being used very successfully in South Africa and South America to produce some interssting and unusual wines.
