Shiraz Wine/Syrah Wine

Syrah and Shiraz are the old world and new world names respectively given to a dark black grape variety, most commonly found in the Northern Rhône. Here it is used to produce the famous wines of Hertmitage, Cote Rôtie and Cornas. It is also extensively used in Australia, most noticeably in the Barossa valley where the vines can be dated back 100 years. South Africa is also producing excellent shiraz wines that represent excellent value for money.

Shiraz (or Syrah) makes exceptionally high quality wines of great depth and intensity. In order to produce these great wines, it is critical that low yields are maintained and the timing of the harvest. When done correctly, this produces wines that are exuberant in spice, pepper, tar and black treacle when young, aging to become smooth and velvety with fruit charcateristics such as blackcurrants, raspberries and damsons.
