Vodka has increased massively in popularity over the last couple of years, fuelled by its versatility as a spirit, easily mixed with a wide range of ingredients in both long drink sand cocktails. However, in the UK the popular perception remains that all vodkas are colourless, neutral spirits whose purpose is simply to add alchohol to another drink.
In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Distillers in different countries as far afield as Poland, Russia, Scandinavia and the US produce distinctive Vodkas with distinct techiques using different ingredients to produce spirits of great diversity and quality.

In Sweden and Russia, wheat is traditionally used which gives a slight aniseed flavour, whilst in Finland barley is more normally used which can give a sweet, nutty and spicy character to the spirit. In Poland by contrast, most vodkas are distilled from rye which gives a characteristic sweet rye bread overtones, or from potata which gives buttery mashed potato flavours. In each instance there are some excellent producers who are creating superbly smooth and stylish drinks that are a delight to drink neat or mixed.
A recent trend has seen the emergence of new "western" distilleries that have taken the learnings from these traditional vodka producing countries to produce new and innovative vodkas that are proving very popular, such as Blackwoods (Scotland), Chase (England) and 42 Below (New Zealand).
Finally, another recent fashion has been the emergence of flavoured Vodkas. Flavoured vodkas have been around for a long time but have experienced a recent burst of popularity as new techniques have been devised for introducing the flavours. In particular, Chase produce some superb naturally falvoured vodkas that are wonderful to taste.
