Philip Shaw bought Koomooloo in the Orange region, New South Wales in June 1988 after flying over the area in a light aircraft and being attracted by the environment that the location could offer - undulating countryside on the side of extinct volcano Mt Conobolas, with a balance of elevation and sunshine that created excellent growing conditions for grapevines. It took over 20 years for Philip to develop Koomooloo into a vineyard of 47 hectares, peaking at an altitude of 900m providing cool growing conditions, and making it one of the highest vineyards in Australia. Annual rainful of approximately 850mm per annum, and a long cool growing season with the grapes ripening in the dry months of February to April were ideal. The soil structure is limestone and volcanic-rock soils as a base, with the topsoil consisting of fine red loess blown form Central Australia on the wind.
Philip Shaw runs the Koomooloo vineyard with minimal automation, with routine hand pruning of the vines, shoot thinning, leaf plucking, crop thinning, and hand picking. He produces two ranges of wines with his "character" wines being his ultimate expression of winemaking. We are proud to stock these and hope that you enjoy them.
